Chris and Maree on the road
We took to cycle-touring as we approached retirement. Not so much the lycra, not so much the sweating, not so much the doing it tough. If it’s going to be unpleasant, we’d rather sit it out until the weather passes, or avoid the miles of unfriendly roads by jumping on a train. On our conventional bikes, we travel with a Garmin (for directions and a record of where we’ve been), but we don’t have much time for Garmin’s virtual partner. That lycra-clad bunch of electrons tends to shoot off ahead of us while we are getting on the bikes, and tends to arrive at our day’s destination about the time we are settling in at one of our frequent rests, over coffee number two or three for the day.
But our new European adventure is on e-bikes—we’ll be expending similar levels of energy, but will be able to cover greater distances and tackle the sorts of European hills that we avoided last time, and perhaps we can give that Garmin fellow a ride for his money… except for the numerous coffee breaks.
